Цены, отражающие конъюнктуру, складывающуюся в конкретный момент в том или ином сегменте мирового товарного рынка (и рынка услуг) и зависящую как от естественных колебаний спроса и предложения данного товара, так и от возможностей крупных монополистов влиять на их динамику. Как правило, в расчетах по М.ц. применяются конвертируемые валюты. М.ц. часто служат в качестве базовых при формировании цен на внутренних рынках отдельных стран. В известной мере, мировые цены – понятие условное. Некоторые экономисты утверждают, что мировых цен вообще не существует. Действительно, за исключением единичных товаров, цены формируются на конкретных региональных, национальных рынках в зависимости от конъюнктуры на каждом из них, и имеют большой разброс. За мировые же принимаются цены, имеющие в данный момент наибольшее распространение, либо тем или иным способом усредненные.
